Q -- What kind of growth should Camden
encourage?
A -- As caretakers of the history and future of
this city, it is important that we promote growth
and development. Growth is important for
Camden as it allows our city to have many of
the cultural offerings that are the envy of larger
cities in South Carolina and beyond. Also,
growth provides the opportunity for our younger
generation to remain in Camden and earn a living
and raise their families.
However, we need smart growth and don’t
want to grow at the expense of our history and
the small-town charm that makes Camden the
city it is. The issue of growth and development
is a vital issue that I think our city’s leaders
appreciate.
We need to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit
of our talented city and to tie our rich history to
meaningful employment opportunities for our
families.
Q -- If you were an ambassador for Camden,
how would you promote the city?
A -- I would invite people to come to a unique

and authentic place that fought for American
freedom and democracy. History, highways, the
arts, and a love of community with a workforce
whose work ethic is second to none.
As an ambassador for Camden I would also
strive to build awareness of our community’s
beauty and natural resources, from our historic
homes to the many recreational opportunities
on the scenic Wateree River (which is just
minutes from the center of downtown).
Q -- What does
community mean to you?
A -- Community is
everything. Community
is people. And as I’ve
said earlier, the people of
Camden are our greatest
strength.
The greatest lessons
I have learned in life
have come directly from
friends and mentors right
here in Camden. One of
the brightest legislative
minds of our generation
is former South Carolina
Speaker of the House
Bob Sheheen. Perhaps
the greatest and most
influential businessmen
in our state is Joe Sullivan of BlueCross
BlueShield of South Carolina, and Harvey
Galloway carries on this proud Camden legacy
at the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina
Foundation.
James D’Alessio is considered by many as
one of the brightest health care policy leaders
in the nation. These sons of Camden and many
others inspire me as do countless others in our
community. My family, friends and colleagues
make my community the very best.
Community is everything. Community is
people. The people of our Camden community
are our greatest strength.
