Located along the banks of the Savannah River, the Riverwalk is Augusta’s
front porch. This two-level brick esplanade of walking paths is a perfect
place to unwind and enjoy Augusta’s classic Southern feel.
Experience Augusta’s historical past by visiting the Augusta Canal. Built
in 1845 as a source of power, water and transportation, it is the only
industrial canal in the American South in continuous use. Today, the
Augusta Canal Discovery Center offers guided boat tours aboard an electric
replica of the Petersburg Boat, once used to move cotton bales during
Augusta’s manufacturing boom.
Historical tours of the Sacred Heart Cultural Center, once a Catholic
Church, are also available. This site is brimming with exquisite architectural
detail, including ninety-four stained glass windows, Italian arches, and
distinctive brickwork.
With so much to do and so little time, let’s see what travelers from Trip
Advisor like to do in Augusta:
“The best way to understand the history of a place is to experience it 7
firsthand. The Augusta Canal Discovery Center allows you step back
in time and experience the canal the way it was. The boat tour guide
was knowledgeable and explained it well.” - Miami, FL
