Can’t leave the mountains without your locally ground grits!
Logan Turnpike Mill sells stone-ground grits and porridge, corn
meals, flours, and mixes ground on the antique grist mills.
Corn is from the Southeast. Wheat is sourced from Montana
where the cold climate and soil produce a high protein grain.
Rye comes from the Midwest and buckwheat from up-state New
York. The mills keep on grinding as they have for the Holland
family owners for 38 years!
When you’re first in town and need to stock the kitchen, you
can also pick up essentials at Blairsville locations of Walmart,
Aldi and Save A Lot.
Sporty Spots
The retailer Mountain Crossings is the only place where the
Appalachian Trail passes through a man-made structure. Built
in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Walasi-Yi
Interpretive Center was completed simultaneously with the trail
and is where the store is located. Mountain Crossings
is a leading distributor for thru-hikers on one of the world’s
most famous trails – selling high quality hiking gear to get you
through an hour on the trail or for eight months, with foods,
refreshments, and Appalachian gifts.
