Aileach Interpretive Centre, Kildonan Museum, South Uist
Clan Donald sailors navigate a working replica Aileach long boat
crucial to defending the Lordship of the Isles and Hebridean
culture in general for centuries. The vessel was destined for the
Aileach Interpretive Centre, Kildonan Museum, South Uist as a
living example of the famed galley’s construction and usage.

Finlaggan

Finlaggan: The Centre of the Lordship of the Isles.
Aerial view of restored archaeological site and reconstructed
bridge at Finlaggan, the interpretive center for the medieval
Lordship of the Isles. Historic seat of Clan Donald, MacDonald
lords descended from earlier Gaelic-speaking kings of the Isles
who ruled over vast territories in the western and northern regions
and adjacent islands of Scotland in the 14th and 15th centuries.
There they developed their own distinctive culture and lordship.
They defeated their Viking predecessors through their seaborne
military might and superior ships which gave them control of
the Hebrides.
