Outdoor Attractions
Sassafras Mountain, the highest
point in South Carolina, sits at 3,553 feet above sea level
on the border with North Carolina, and is also on the
Eastern Continental Divide. The 77-mile Foothills Trail
passes over the top of Sassafras on its journey between
Table Rock and Oconee State Park.
Parking is available at the end of F Van Clayton
Memorial Highway (accessed via US 178 in Rocky
Bottom). A scenic overlook platform is available at
the parking area, featuring views of Georgia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee on clear days.
Take a short walk up to the top of the mountain and
you will find a large overlook with 360-degree views of
the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
