     Outdoor Attractions









          Sassafras Mountain, the highest
          point in South Carolina, sits at 3,553 feet above sea level
          on the border with North Carolina, and is also on the
          Eastern Continental Divide. The 77-mile Foothills Trail
          passes over the top of Sassafras on its journey between
          Table Rock and Oconee State Park.

          Parking is available at the end of F Van Clayton
          Memorial Highway (accessed via US 178 in Rocky
          Bottom). A scenic overlook platform is available at
          the parking area, featuring views of Georgia, North
          Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee on clear days.
          Take a short walk up to the top of the mountain and
          you will find a large overlook with 360-degree views of
          the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.






        South Carolina Botanical Garden
        The 295-acre South Carolina Botanical Garden on
        the campus of Clemson University is a nature-lover’s
        must-stop destination. The Garden includes the
        Fran Hanson Discovery Center that houses rotating
        exhibits and a gift shop, the National Register of
        Historic Places-listed Hanover House, the 1826 Hunt
        Cabin, and gems, minerals, unusual fossils of the Bob
        Campbell Geology Museum, and more than three
        miles of easy nature trails. The garden is open seven
        days a week from sunrise to sunset. Please call to
        inquire about hours for some facilities.
