The first inhabitants named these mountains
“ta-lo-ne-ga” which, in their native Cherokee,
means yellow, for the gold that laces the earth
here. While there is still some real gold to be
found here, we recognize that our real treasures
are our sparkling rivers, panoramic mountain
views, clean air, and abundant wildlife – all only buildings. It’s not unusual to hear musicians
an hour from the cosmopolitan amenities
of Atlanta.
Lumpkin County’s growing economy can
be attributed to families, retirees and second-
home owners who have chosen to locate here,
perhaps inspired by its consistent rankings
as a top national retirement location by such
publications as U.S. News & World Report, USA
TODAY, Where to Retire magazine, and “Great
Retirement Spots” newsletter. With a thriving
arts community, impromptu mountain music
around every corner, gold panning, phenomenal
golf courses, and other recreational venues,
Lumpkin County is perfect for those looking
for that “little something extra.”
Our residents know how to play, especially
outdoors. This area is a prime destination
for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, trout fishing,
horseback riding, and mountain biking.
Some of the most magnificent motorcycle
rides in the country can be found along the
county’s mountain roads.

Dahlonega’s historic public square is the
hub of the county’s thriving tourism industry,
and residents enjoy the city’s charm as much
as visitors do. Connected by shaded brick
sidewalks, shops, galleries, restaurants, and
entertainment spots fill our 19th-century
jamming on the square and see artists with
their sketch pads in this 2016 winner of the
Great American Main Street Award.®
The University of North Georgia is an
attraction in and of itself, drawing thousands
of students to the area every year. Many
of these students choose to stay here upon
graduation, while others return often with
their families for vacations, reunions, and
even retirement. The University also provides
ample opportunities for lifelong learning for
Lumpkin County’s adult population through
a full menu of continuing education classes,
including professional development courses
and recertification classes.
