        site of the first painless surgery, performed March 30, 1842, by Dr. Crawford W. Long.

        You can see the site of “America’s greatest contribution to medicine” at the Crawford        Museum

        W. Long Museum in Jefferson. Explore the permanent exhibits that tell the story of                         ARTS & LEISURE

        Dr. Long, his family and achievements, and his work in pharmacy. Trace the development
        of anesthesia from 1842 to advanced modern operating technology. And absorb the

        charm of a mid-1800s general store, reflecting the past culture of Jackson County.
