Mainland Georgetown County
Mainland Georgetown County has two incorporated cities, Georgetown and Andrews.
Elisha Screven mapped the plans for the City of Georgetown in 1729, making Georgetown South
Carolina’s third-oldest city with the legends and landmarks to prove it.
Georgetown has seen times of growth and times of quiet, war and peace, and has even hosted
such notable figures as Thomas Lynch, Jr. (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), the
Marquis de Lafayette and the father of our nation, George Washington.
Georgetown honors its past in the preservation of the city’s historic district along with
revitalized historical homes, some of which are now bed and breakfasts and open to the public.
The original street names still mark the town streets and remind locals of the city’s rich past that
influences the present.
Georgetown’s population is relatively young. While the average age of residents of the
Waccamaw Neck communities is in the 50s, Georgetown is comprised primarily of young, diverse
families; the median age is 36.8.
Georgetown residential properties range from $100,000 to $10 million and include condos,
single-family homes, waterfront properties, even historic Southern plantations.
About 15 miles inland from Georgetown is the small town of Andrews, as quaint and quiet as
the day it was founded more than 100 years ago with the consolidation of the towns of Rosemary
and Harpers Crossroads. Residents today enjoy the Black River which carves its way through the
town and the scenic trails that wind with it. The Black River is also known for its swimming holes,
boating and fishing. Avid hunters especially enjoy the area with its abundance of wildlife.
