TOWN OF WILLIAMSTON
Farmer West Williams discovered a clear Town of Willamston
mineral spring on his property in 1842.
The waters’ medicinal properties became
renowned and the town, then known as
Mineral Springs, acquired the nickname
“Saratoga of the South,” referring to New
York’s similar spring. The town became
a major resort with railroad service,
and by 1852 the name was changed to
Town of Starr Williamston. Mr. Williams set land aside to
preserve the spring and to build schools
