MURRELLS INLET

Best described as a beautifully quaint fishing
village, Murrells Inlet is known as “The Seafood
Capital of South Carolina” and was, reportedly,
founded by Captain Murrell in the early 18th
century. The good captain no doubt encountered
many pirates upon his arrival in the inlet, for it
was believed to have been a favorite hideout for
buccaneers who used the inlet as a safe “escape”
as well as a storage site for stolen loot. Blockade
runners also used Murrells Inlet during the
War Between the States, and rum smugglers
stockpiled bootleg liquor there during Prohibition.
Today, Murrells Inlet is a picturesque and
peaceful fishing community where locals delight
in regaling visitors with tall tales and ghost
stories (remember to ask about “the Legend of
Alice”). As a community that is surrounded by the
extraordinary natural beauty of the marshes, this
town strives to preserve and enhance its natural
