in our corner, Fort Oglethorpe is undergoing a
revitalization to bring life and activity into formerly
vacant areas, key streets, and corridors.
Just north of the 5,200-acre Chickamauga Battlefield and
eight miles from Chattanooga, Fort Oglethorpe is positioned
to greet the future while preserving its heritage.
The Fort Oglethorpe Renaissance Strategic Vision and Plan
(RSVP) emerged from the public input of approximately Stable 41 Farmers Market
1,000 residents who stepped up to help recommend Citizen focus groups led to the realization that the community
design solutions. This master plan addresses the heart of needed a farmers market. After purchasing property in the
Fort Oglethorpe’s historic core, including Barnhardt Circle, historic district, the City converted an old, three-sided truck
Lafayette Road, and the roads radiating from it. terminal – once one of the many stables housing the 6th
Cavalry’s horses, called Stable 41 – into an open-air pavilion.
Not only is this space ideal for a farmers market, it will also
serve as a multi-function event space.
This plan outlines solutions that will help to deliver a
more vibrant, welcoming, and connected historic area
for all residents and visitors. The concept envisions
reconnecting surrounding neighborhoods with historic
Fort Oglethorpe to help ensure Barnhardt Circle and
historic Fort Oglethorpe continue to serve as the heart
of this gateway community.
Small-business support is a focus. So is installing more
greenspaces and an amphitheater in the area as the
community continues to drive the planning process.
