        HISTORIC LIBERTY THEATRE
          Opened in 1924, Columbus’ first Black
        theatre continues to host musical events, plays,
        and classes. Named to the National Register
        of Historic Places in 1984, the theater has
        hosted such ground-breaking performers as Ella
        Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, and Columbus’ own Ma
        Rainey and her protégé, Bessie Smith.
