Opened in 1924, Columbus’ first Black
theatre was placed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1984, and has hosted
such performers as Marian Anderson, Ella
Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, the
big bands of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway
and Fletcher Henderson, as well as
Columbus’ own Ma Rainey and her
