Lithonia
Granite lives here
When rural farmers gathered for trade among themselves, Lithonia was born.
Lithonia means “stone place,” and the local granite has been quarried and used
throughout the U.S. since the late 1800s. The introduction of the railway to the
area in 1845 enabled Lithonia to become the epicenter of the regional granite
industry. The architecture and historical structures of Lithonia placed the city on
the National Register of Historic Places and tell the story of the area’s development
and relationships with granite and the railroad.
Amenities include the Lithonia Amphitheater and Lithonia Park.
Community Event
September in Lithonia means The Original Collard Greens Cultural Festival. The
event celebrates the traditions and culture of historical contributions of African
Americans while promoting family unity, the importance of healthy eating, and the
value of living for the well-being of future generations. Every fall the festival takes
place at Lithonia City Park and Amphitheater. Thousands attend and enjoy vendors,
entertainment, and cook-offs, including the category Most Creative Collard Greens.
