STOP Bryan Neck Presbyterian
14 Church, Manse, & Cemetery
7196 Belfast Keller Road
Certified by the Presbytery of Georgia in 1830, this
church is the oldest congregation in lower Bryan
County, founded by prominent rice planters like
Thomas Savage Clay, Richard James Arnold, and
George Washington McAllister. After the original
1839 meeting house burned, the current sanctuary
was built in 1885 and remains the oldest public
building in Bryan County, with the adjacent Burnt
Church Cemetery holding the graves of its early
members. The structure to the left of the church is
a manse built by Henry Ford in 1939 in exchange
for land with the church.
The church, manse, and cemetery form a district on
the National Register of Historic Places.
STOP Kilkenny
15 3083 Kilkenny Road
Kilkenny, circa 1845, was originally the 662-acre
property of Thomas Young beginning around
1765. Under the ownership of Charles Rogers,
it produced the largest amount of cotton in
Bryan County. Other prominent owners include
Tennessee Governor John I. Cox and Henry and
Clara Ford. This is a private residence. Please do
not enter the driveway or knock on the door.
The Kilkenny home was damaged by Union
cannonballs during the Civil War. Ford restored
the structure but preserved the cannonball holes,
building tiny doors around the broken studs.
