Hiking Trails and Waterfalls
Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail (AT) in Georgia extends
78.2 miles through the Chattahoochee-
Oconee National Forest, passing through
five federally designated wilderness areas,
a national recreation area, and a protected
corridor. The Trail follows the southernmost
segment of the Blue Ridge chain of the
Appalachian Mountains, reaching elevations
above 4,000 feet at several locations. With 50
miles of connected, maintained side trails,
hiking opportunities of challenge, variety, and
breathtaking views abound.
White County is 52 trail miles north of the
AT’s southern terminus on the summit of
Springer Mountain. There are several AT access
points in White County, including at Tesnatee
Gap in Cleveland and Unicoi Gap in Helen.
High Shoals Falls Trail
Home to two waterfalls, High Shoals Falls
Trail is worth the trip outside of White
County. The High Shoals Falls trailhead is
accessed via Indian Grave Gap Road (Forest
Service Road 283) in Towns County. The
access road can be challenging for vehicles
with two-wheel drive and in bad weather.
Once on the trail, you won’t be disappointed.
