Lake Blackshear and the Flint River form the eastern border of
Sumter County. The lake is popular for fishing (bass, crappie),
boating, and paddleboarding. Just across the lake at Georgia
Veterans State Park, catch the SAM Shortline Excursion Train
through Sumter County’s pastoral countryside to Plains.

Play 18 holes at Sumter County Parks and Rec’s The 19th
Green, a beginner-friendly course that also offers a few
holes for advanced players. Georgia Southwestern State
University, known for its excellent men’s golf program, owns
and operates the Griffin Bell Golf Course, which features a
challenging 18 holes open to the public.
Arts & Theater
The Americus Council for the Arts puts on classes and events
for the community, promoting the works of local artists in the
process. Georgia Southwestern State University drives the
area’s interest in glassblowing with the only collegiate major in
glass in Georgia. Hot Glass Academy and Mobile Glassblowing
Studios offer year-round workshops and demonstrations.

For live performances, get tickets for the Sumter Players, a
community theater group that offers several shows each year,
including classics like A Christmas Carol, Chicago, and Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory.

The Rylander Theatre is a beautifully restored, 600-seat
theater that is open for tours and performances. The Rylander
calendar includes plays, concerts, and dance troupes, offering
fun for the whole family.
