The Workforce Development and Community Education Division is
responsible for responding to these needs by providing services to
individuals, organizations, businesses, and industries within Alleghany,
Ashe, and Wilkes counties. Tailored to the needs of our service area,
the courses range from basic skills to advanced courses in various
technical fields. In addition, a range of vocational courses are offered
that are designed to meet the needs and interests of the citizens of
the region.

HIGHER EDUCATION
North Carolina is home to the country’s
oldest state-supported university, the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
established in 1789. The state is also home
to elite colleges and universities such as
Duke University, Wake Forest University,
Davidson College, Elon University, High Point
University, Catawba College, and Appalachian
State University. There are 13 colleges and
universities within 50 miles of Wilkes County.
PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Wilkes County Public Library
is part of the Appalachian Regional Library
system, a network of libraries across
northwestern North Carolina. Wilkes County
Library has a range of programs and services
tailored to children, teens, and adults. A
modern library, Wilkes County Library has
digital collections, online resources, and virtual
programs, as well as traditional printed books
and resources.
