Monument Square District

The heart of the city where history, heroes and
              hometown charm intersect.

This district comprises the central portion of a 1768
Colonial land grant to the “father of Camden”
– Joseph Kershaw. Known as “Log Town,” the settlers
built their log houses from the large virgin pine trees
covering the original 250 acres.
Today the district derives its name from the large
central square of parks quartered by the intersection
of Broad and Laurens Streets.
Originally laid out in a 1798 plan as public squares for
social gatherings, the parks today are anchored by
memorial monuments and historic landmarks.
