Hobkirk’s Hill District

From a staging point for a Patriot
       attack on British-occupied Camden, to
      a turn-of-the-century resort destination.

This district comprises both the eastern and western
ridges of Hobkirk’s Hill in the northern part of Camden.
It is named for Thomas Hobkirk who owned 100 acres
here in the 1760s.
This is where General Nathanael Greene led his small
army in a fierce clash with the British forces during the
American Revolutionary War.
Here, too, you will find the magnificent country homes
of the Village of Kirkwood, founded by early planters
who nestled their estates along a common area
containing a spring-fed lake.
At the turn of the century, the district attracted wealthy
northerners, which spawned a Winter Colony and
Camden’s Grand Hotel Era.
