n the early 1970s, Warner Brothers filmed a little
movie called Deliverance on North Georgia’s
IChattooga River. The tale of four adventurers’
encounters with dangerous rapids, and even more
dangerous locals, earned three Oscar nominations,
kick-started Georgia’s film industry, and ignited the
sport of whitewater rafting in the state.

Today, whitewater enthusiasts can hit at least four
Georgia rivers, casually sliding through Class I-II rapids
or bracing for the wildest rides on up to Class VI foam.
RUSH! The National Wild & Scenic Chattooga River is where Georgia
whitewater got its start. At least three different outfitters lead
trips along this 26-mile span. Families like Section 3, with its
gentle Class I-III rapids with the option to run Bull Sluice, a Class
IV drop. Section 4 is serious whitewater for advanced paddlers
and rafters, including Five Falls, a set of five Class IV-V rapids in
a 1/3-mile stretch.
