Downtown Belmont
istoric Belmont is the fabric of
Southern charm, with the nostalgia
inspired by the downtown
H streetlamps and brick sidewalks
counterbalanced by local shops offering
the latest in home décor and fashion.
Belmont and its downtown, populated
with passionate local merchants, is a
member of Main Street America. The
city’s proximity to Charlotte and easy
access to waterways attract new investors
and residents.
Belmont’s story began in the textile
industry and evolved into one of growth
and redevelopment. Chronicle Mill opened
in 1901 as Belmont’s first textile mill,
one of a couple dozen by the end of the
20th Century. Belmont’s historic homes
and renovated textile mills today are
repurposed for housing and workspace.
The coming of the railroad through
downtown Belmont in 1871 connected
trade and travel. A year later, the Caldwell
Plantation was purchased and donated
to Benedictine monks, leading to the
formation of Belmont Abbey College –
