Helix/R Sculpture
he nickname Khaki Town USA along
with a downtown mural memorializes
how town namesake Stuart Cramer
T founded Cramerton Army Cloth and
outfitted American service members
in the 1930s and ‘40s. Cramer was
also a pioneer in creating modern air
conditioning. Cramerton is known as
much today as the Model Mill Village of
the Future; a place where summer
concerts, festivals, public art pieces
and community spaces are thriving.
The heart of the Carolina Thread
Trail System runs through Cramerton.
Residents have more than 180 acres of
park and open space, 10+ miles of trails
and at least 10 river access points and
fishing piers.
Part of the Carolina Thread Trail, Helix/R
is a new sculpture in town by John Rietta
– listed on the Smithsonian American Art
Museum Inventory and installed on the
Riverside Greenway. Helix/R was originally
unveiled in Uptown Charlotte in 1983;
the sculpture’s new placement creates a
pocket park in Cramerton. Its reflective
surfaces mirror nature and activity on the
Thread Trail, offering a dialogue between
sculpture and landscape.
