The Fiber Innovation Center is behind and is part of Gaston
College’s Textile Technology Center, which has provided
technical assistance and support to the textile industry in
North Carolina and around the world for more than 75 years.
The Textile Technology Center and Fiber Innovation Center
will be the place where students can get hands-on experience
in research and development, testing, and production
processes for the textile industry along with collaborating
scientists and fiber industry entrepreneurs.
It’s about the future and it’s here in Belmont.

Fiber Innovation Center
Associate Degree

To meet emerging workforce opportunities, a new
associate degree program, internship opportunities, and
customized training programs will be offered by Gaston
College at the Fiber Innovation Center. These opportuni-
ties will prepare students for work as textile technicians
and designers, with the ability to transfer credits to a four-
year university.
Fiber is far-reaching and in addition to fashion, it’s about:
• Protection – military, police, fire, construction
• Functionality – furniture, carpet, geotextiles
• Technology – smart fabrics, wearable technology,
e-textiles (embedded electronics)
• Health – personal protective equipment, biomedical
materials, air/water filtration
• Performance – automotive, aircraft, aerospace
• Sustainability – biodegradable, recyclable, organics
