W elcome to A Friendly Place, Stanley’s motto
adopted from a 1960 community contest and
still relevant for the small town of more than
4,000 residents. One of the town’s most historic assets is
the discovery and naming of the Large Leafed Magnolia
by André Michaux, a French botanist who discovered the
tree here in the Stanley area – the prominent feature in the
town’s logo.
Summers wouldn’t be as cool without Cooling off
